Mr. Jones, the Harding Academy chorus director contacted us about
coming up to the Twin Cities for Memorial Day weekend while they are on
chorus tour. David and I talked to our church to make sure they could
host and accommodate the kids that weekend. The chorus got here on
Thursday, May 24 and had a concert that night. David and I had 5 girls
stay with us Thursday and Friday night. It was a lot of fun. Then
Friday morning they went to Mall of America and the Twins game that
night. We went to the game with the chorus Friday night, and the girls
rode the city bus back to our apartment with us.
After
the chorus left on Saturday morning, David and I loaded up his car with
all of our camping gear and hit the road to Grand Marais, MN for a
camping trip. Grand Marais is 4 hours North of Saint Paul up on the
North shore of Lake Superior. We got to Grand Marais about 4:00 and set
up our tent. It was absolutely FREEZING!! It was cloudy and 47
degrees. Our tent was really fabulous, it connects to the back of our
car.
We
cooked out hot dogs over the wood grill (wood is provided for $5 a
bundle and is based on the honor system after 7 pm when the office
closes). You just go grab your bundle then pay in the morning. We
walked down to the down and walked about 50 feet from our campsite to
the shore of Lake Superior. Then we roasted marshmallows and had
smores. Did I say it was cold???
p.s. I was very thankful I kept my Kojie sweatshirt. I would have died without it.
After we ate our smores the rain started again and we decided to
it was time for bed. It rained, and rained, and rained, and stormed,
and rained, and stormed all night. I woke up at 7 am and it was still
storming, so we decided to load up our car (without having to step out
in the rain!!) and head on back home. We had breakfast at a famous
donut shop in Grand Marais.
Then drove down to Duluth and had lunch there. It was still cold
and rainy, so we kept driving towards home. We stopped at the St.
Croix State Park because in the 3 hours of driving the temperature had
gone up 30 degrees and it was sunny. So we pulled into the park, rode
our bikes, David went fishing, saw three baby cubs and a mama bear and
drove back the last hour to home. The trip was cut short, but we had
fun. We will definitely do it again sometime, maybe even try out
another campground.
Although, the North Shore really is beautiful!
Thanks Chelsea, for reminding me to update!!!
